MTO’s COMPASS System is a large integrated highway traffic management system intended to improve safety, optimize highway capacity, provide faster detection and response to incidents on the highway, and balance traffic volumes between the highway and adjacent routes. The MTO Burlington COMPASS Control Centre covers highways in Niagara, Hamilton, Halton and portions of Peel Region, and operates 54 CCTV cameras, 6 fibre-optic/flip-disk changeable message signs and 154 vehicle detector stations.

Applied Electronics designed a video wall in close consort with MTO’s design consultant, and supplied and integrated the system into the facility in the summer of 2005. The large monitor wall is comprised of a 2x6 array of 60” (diagonal) DLP rear projection cubes, each fed by a multi-video processor to produce real-time images.

Camera footage is used by many local emergency organizations such as the Burlington Fire Department, Halton Region Emergency Medical Services, the O.P.P. (Ontario Provincial Police), as well as many southern Ontario television stations.
