The Calgary Flames, a franchise of the National Hockey League (NHL), operates a broadcast television production facility in their venue, the Pengrowth Saddledome. The control room operates as both a live broadcast studio and video post-production facility. A multi-camera, live-event feed is produced and distributed, closed circuit, on display screens around the venue and on the arena’s Jumbotron screens. The coverage is also sent live, via fiber-optic link, to broadcasters in North America for video highlight packages.

Applied Electronics was contracted to replace the conventional CRT-based monitor wall with a state-of-the-art solution that would be functional and impressive to the many fans who tour the facility.

The customer’s requirement was a large screen display that could accommodate 36 incoming live-video feeds and display them in multiple configurations depending on the specific event being broadcasted. The display system had to be compact, fit into an existing facility with space restrictions and integrate seamlessly with the existing television broadcast technology infrastructure.
